The BIG SECRET to Getting Others to Eat Gluten Free

Far too often I hear about gluten sensitive eaters who are eating gluten just to please others, because their family/friend/significant other/coworker/neighbor/whoever won’t like it if its gluten free. Well here’s something to consider, you will get sick if you eat gluten, the other people you’re worried about will not get sick if they eat gluten free (unless they have some sort of sensitivity or medical condition). So what makes more sense, serving a dish that you know will make you feel like crap or serving something that will make everyone feel good?

The truth about gluten free food is that its not much different from “regular” food. With the right ingredients and the right recipe, you can make just about anything taste as good or even better than it did when it had gluten. For example, I brought a tray of gluten and dairy free brownies and cookies to my roller derby team dinner and they were a hit! The girls ate them without realizing they were allergy friendly and when I later mentioned they were gluten and dairy free, one of my teammates mentioned she didn’t feel bloated after eating them which is how she usually feels after eating baked goods. So not only did I satisfy the taste buds of my teammates, but I also introduced them to eating gluten and dairy free.

The point is, if you tell someone they are eating gluten free, they will likely assume its not going to taste as good as “regular” food because its “special” food for people who can’t eat “real” food. But if you let them try it before mentioning its gluten free, they will usually be less judgmental and more likely to give you their honest opinion of it. You are doing yourself and everyone around you a favor by taking care of your health needs. The best part is you are showing the people you care about that you can eat “regular” food too! Because if they liked it, it must be normal!

Here is a picture of my tray of brownies and cookies. Looks normal, right!? Eating the same tray of baked goods as my teammates sure made this celiac feel like a normal eater!
